Stephen J. Waterman, Esq.,
Superintendent Welcome to our website and our district! The Bayshore School District is located in the northeast corner of San Mateo County and encompasses small portions of Daly City and Brisbane. This year, the district serves approximately 400 students in grades K through 8 in two small schools. (When students reach high school age, they attend school at one of the Jefferson High School District schools.) Our children are served by eighteen classroom teachers, an English language development teacher, a school psychologist, a physical education teacher, music instruction, two special education teachers, and a number of classified support staff, including a library clerk, instructional aides, and a technology specialist. We participate in the state’s class size reduction program in grades kindergarten through three, with an average class size of 18.7 students this year. The average class size in grades 4 through 8 is 26 students. The district has modern, high-speed connections to the internet in all classrooms at both schools and a computer lab at our intermediate school. Students in the upper grades use the internet to research as they work on social studies, science, and writing projects. Our state test scores place the district very competitively, compared with other, similar schools in the state. Moreover, scores for eighth graders, especially in mathematics, are competitive with many of the high-achieving schools in the Bay Area. Algebra is the cornerstone of our eighth-grade mathematics curriculum, with more than a quarter of our students scoring “proficient” on the STAR Algebra test in 2005. Our English scores are affected by the number of students who are learning English. Once they do learn English, however, they perform well on both class assignments and state tests. With the assistance of grants, we provide rhythm or choral music to all students and have an instrumental music program for middle-school students. Our middle school has an active student government and student newspaper, and offers dance, a full physical education program, and interscholastic basketball. With the assistance of the Mid-Peninsula Boys and Girls Club, the Daly City Parks and Recreation Program, and the KARES program, we are able to offer homework help and after-school care for our students. With the anticipated opening of the new Community Center in February 2006, we will be able to expand our enrichment activities for students. We are fortunate to have extra help for our families through the Bayshore Family Resource Center and the Even Start Program, located on the Bayshore School Campus, and Our Second Home, located near Bayshore School.
